HISTORIC STAGE PRESERVATION

Status- inprocess

2022  /   2023

The restoration and adaptive reuse of the stage in Gyumri’s Friendship Park was undertaken by the Tuff Foundation. In collaboration with Pomp_and_Circumstance_Lab we aimed to preserve the historical value of the structure while granting it a new purpose for contemporary use.Historically, the park’s stage and its adjacent dance area were celebrated for their exceptional acoustics, as noted by many who experienced its past vibrancy. The stage served as a platform for performances by both renowned artists and emerging talents, cementing its place as a cherished cultural landmark. Our primary goal was to preserve the structure by all means, employing an Italian method where reconstructed sections are deliberately distinguishable from the original preserved parts. To enhance the durability of the stage’s roof, support columns will be installed, carefully concealed behind a metallic mesh that will “envelop” the stage with care.Special lighting will allow for selective illumination, either of the stage or the mesh, depending on the purpose. For example, during concerts, the focus will be on the stage, while on regular days, the mesh “curtain” will be illuminated, transforming it into a unique art object within the park’s landscape.
